Download PDF The general stress and coping paradigm (Lazarus & Folkman, 1984) is the foundation of much of the research literature on adaptation in chronic medical illness. Lazarus (1993) has suggested that the adaptational value of a particular type of coping may be a function of the characteristics of the stressful encounter being considered (e.g., controllability of the stressor).
